Happiness and Sadness are opposite ends of the same spectrum. They can be equally complicated or equally simple and both can be caused by the same kinds of things.
The ups and downs of relationships, how well (or not) we feel we’re doing, the effect of the weather or suddenly unexpected events – all of these could trigger happiness or sadness.
It could be a combination of several things we’ve not even mentioned, or even be for ‘no reason’ – quite possibly just your body chemistry doing the talking. Feeling happy for no reason (or for any reason) generally isn’t a problem, so we don’t feel the need to explore it and understand why. Feeling sad on the other hand, can disable us to the point where we’re simply stopped in our tracks – and it’s fairly obvious that we DO have a problem, and something needs to be fixed.
From our point of view at Happy City, this connection between the positives and negatives is crucial. There’s value in exploring both sides of the equation, and we’d NEVER endorse any kind of ‘positive thinking’ which excludes the negatives which are an unavoidable part of life. That’s why we were so happy to find this excellent guide on feelings of sadness – if you’re struggling to make your way at the moment, take a look at it now.
The guide was published by our friends at the Counselling Directory – we’re glad they’re there.
