CTP recently welcomed several new Board members that we will be introducing in a regular blog. First up is Brian Connolly, a specialist in place-based development who is experienced in transforming and empowering communities in Scotland. This work sparked an interest in CTP’s mission to deliver an economy that works for people, rather than the other way round.
For the past decade, I’ve been immersed in the world of place-based economic development, driven by a singular question – how can we ensure more progressive outcomes from economic interventions? This has led me down a path of exploring wellbeing economies and supporting communities to achieve their aspirations, as well as digging into the relationship between public and private sector in delivering change. This year, I’m thrilled to announce my next step in this journey – joining the board of the Centre for Thriving Places (CTP).
Growing up in Glasgow, I have seen first hand the distinct differences in life outcomes experienced by those around me. I have been fortunate to benefit from the opportunities of higher education, with degrees exploring topics from Geography, Marketing, Adult Education, International Trade and recently a professional Masters in Business. Throughout both my educational and professional development, I have always been driven by a desire to understand how I can share my learning with others, including the publication of a book of economic poetry.
CTP’s role as a gateway for those beginning their journey into new economic approaches is crucial in spreading these ideas and practices.
CTP stands at the forefront of a crucial shift in economic thinking. Its work aligns perfectly with my long standing interest in creating more equitable, sustainable and thriving local economies. What particularly excites me is CTP’s holistic approach to its own organisational development, one that goes beyond traditional metrics to encompass joy, profit, and impact. In a world grappling with complex challenges, from climate change to social inequality, CTP’s mission couldn’t be more timely. Its focus on developing a Thriving Places Approach resonates deeply with my belief that economic development must be rooted in the unique needs and potentials of each community.
I’m particularly drawn to CTP’s commitment to practical change. Its work across the UK demonstrates a real-world impact that goes beyond theory. By offering flexible, adaptable frameworks and tools, CTP is helping diverse places embed sustainable economic practices that truly serve their communities. Moreover, CTP’s strategic focus on consolidation, delivery, and sustainable growth aligns with my vision for the future of economic development. CTP’s plans to strengthen its toolkit, create a ‘playbook’ of processes and develop resources to spread knowledge more widely are exactly the kind of initiatives I believe can drive systemic change.
As someone who has long advocated for a more progressive approach to economic intervention, I’m excited by CTP’s growing influence in key areas of place-based development. I have been particularly impressed by its partnership work with organisations such as New Economics Foundation, Centre for Local Economic Strategies and Co-operatives UK in projects such as Reclaiming Our Regional Economies. Its role as a gateway for those beginning their journey into new economic approaches is crucial in spreading these ideas and practices.
Joining the Board represents an opportunity to contribute to this vital work and to help shape the future of place-based economic development. I look forward to bringing my experience to support CTP’s mission, particularly as it aims to move from working with individual organisations to supporting whole systems in the transition to a more equitable and sustainable economy. In these critical times, as we face unprecedented economic, social, and environmental challenges, the work of organisations like the CTP is more important than ever. I’m honoured to be part of this journey and excited about the positive change we can create together.
