We do. We think the economy needs reprogramming, so that it values what really matters.
March 18th marks 50 years since Bobby Kennedy made a famous speech spelling out the inadequacy of GDP. Yet our economic reality is still lagging far behind these progressive ideas.
Today, our economy is still obsessed by GDP growth and consumerism, which has fueled great inequality and put the planet we live on at risk. It’s set up to ‘count’ war and natural disaster, but fails to count what really matters; like decent houses and jobs, green spaces and clean air.
Together with the Network of Wellbeing, we are launching a photo competition to show what the current economic model is missing.
The challenge, is to share a great photo of something that GDP doesn’t measure, along with a story telling us why this matters.
What makes you #HappyBeyondGDP?
You can submit your entry to the photo competition here
Or submit it directly on twitter or instagram – just post your entries with a short story and the hashtag #HappyBeyondGDP, and with @happycityUK and @NetwrkWellbeing tagged.
One lucky winner will receive a £50 voucher to invest in more beautiful photography, and all entries that meet the brief will be promoted on social media.
So if you’re handy with a camera, and have an eye for those things in life with real value, join in and help get people talking about what really matters.
Check out the short film below, and the full text of Kennedy’s speech here for more inspiration!
NB. You can send multiple entries to this competition, and please note that entering this competition means we will reuse your image
