A piece of research by Happy City wellbeing measurement advisor Saamah Abdallah at the New Economics Foundation released this week shows a strong correlation between inequalities in wellbeing and votes to leave the EU.
Entitled ‘The one graph that could explain Brexit’, Abdallah explains how parts of the country with higher wellbeing inequality tended to vote leave more. Levels of income inequality in a place did not have any bearing.
The study, part of NEF’s work with the What Works Centre for Wellbeing, adds to the growing body of evidence showing the assumptions and measures of traditional economics need revision to reflect modern day insights into human behaviour.
